Unless a Grain Falls

John 12:24 (LXX) · 2026-04-07

After declaring that the hour has come, Jesus gives us an image: a seed that must fall and break open to bear fruit. What feels like loss may be the beginning of transformation.

Scripture Reading

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

Devotional Reflection

Yesterday, we heard Jesus say:

“The hour has come.”

And now, He draws us closer—
not just to understand what’s happening…
but to understand what it means.

Because He doesn’t leave this as a distant idea.

He brings it into something we can see.
Something we can feel.

A seed.

Simple. Small. Ordinary.

And yet, it carries a truth that changes everything.

A seed has potential. It contains life within it.

But as long as it remains intact—
unchanged, untouched—
it stays alone.

To become what it was created to be, it must be buried.
It must break open.

And only then does it grow.

This isn’t just about agriculture.

This is about us.

There are parts of our lives that we hold onto tightly—
our plans, our expectations, our sense of control.

And yet, those very things can keep us from becoming who we are meant to be.

Because growth in God’s Kingdom often begins with a breaking open.

Not destruction…
but transformation.

Today, don’t ask, “What am I losing?”

Ask, “What is God growing?”

Where is He inviting you to trust Him more deeply?

Where is He asking you to release something
so that something greater can take root?

The seed doesn’t understand the soil.
But it trusts the process.

And so can you.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

You have placed life within me—
purpose, calling, and possibility.

And yet, I often resist the process
that brings that life to fruition.

I hold onto what is familiar.
I cling to what I can control.

But You are calling me into something deeper.

Give me the courage to let go
of what I am not meant to keep.

Help me to trust You
in the hidden places—
in the moments when I cannot yet see
what You are doing.

When I feel like I am being buried,
remind me that I am being planted.

When things feel uncertain,
anchor me in Your faithfulness.

And as You work within me,
bring forth fruit—
not for my glory,
but for Yours.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
