On the Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:30–31 (LXX) · 2026-03-26

Christ often walks with us unseen, and in moments of grace—our eyes are opened to recognize His presence.

Scripture Reading

30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

Devotional Reflection

As we move deeper into Lent, we begin to look ahead.

Toward resurrection.
Toward recognition.
Toward the moment when Christ is revealed.

The disciples walked with Christ but did not recognize Him.

• They spoke with Him.
• They listened to Him.
• Their hearts were stirred along the way.

And yet—they didn’t see.

Until the moment of breaking bread.

In that simple, familiar act, something changed.

Their eyes were opened.

What had been hidden became clear.

Recognition came not through explanation alone,

but through encounter.

Christ wasn’t absent on the road.

He was present all along—unseen, but near.

Sometimes we walk through life the same way.

We move through our days unaware that Christ is already with us.

• In Scripture—speaking truth into our lives.
• In prayer—quietly drawing near to the heart.
• In others—revealing Himself in unexpected ways.

We may feel confused, discouraged, or uncertain.

Like the disciples, we may even speak about Him
without realizing He is walking beside us.

But Lent prepares us for recognition.

It slows us down.

It softens our hearts.

It opens our eyes.

So that what once felt distant is revealed as deeply present.

Today, remain attentive.

Pay attention to the small moments.

A word of Scripture that lingers.
A quiet prompting in prayer.
An unexpected encounter with someone in need.

Do not rush past these moments.

Christ often reveals Himself not in what is dramatic,

but in what is simple and easily overlooked.

Stay present.
Stay watchful.
Stay open.

Because Christ may be closer than you realize—

walking beside you, waiting to be recognized.

Closing Prayer

Lord,
Walk with me, even when I do not recognize You.
Open my eyes to Your presence in my daily life.
In moments of confusion, guide me.
In moments of doubt, strengthen me.
In moments of quiet, reveal Yourself to me.
Help me recognize You in Scripture, in prayer, and in the people around me.
And as my heart is opened, draw me closer into communion with You.
Let this Lenten journey prepare me to see You clearly and to rejoice in Your presence.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
