The Widow’s Offering

Luke 21:3–4 (LXX) · 2026-03-25

Jesus reveals that true generosity is not measured by amount, but by the depth of trust and sacrifice behind the gift.

Scripture Reading

3 This poor widow hath cast in more than they all:

4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

Devotional Reflection

In a world that measures value by size and visibility, Christ reveals a different standard.

He sees the heart.

In today’s reading, Jesus is watching as people place their offerings into the temple treasury.

Many give out of their abundance—large gifts that are easily noticed.

But then a poor widow approaches, and she gives something small, almost invisible to everyone else.

And yet, Christ stops and draws attention to her.

Because what He sees is not the size of the gift—

but the depth of the sacrifice.

The widow’s gift was small.

But her trust was great.

God measures sacrifice differently than we do.

Sometimes we give what’s easy.

But God invites us to give what is meaningful.

• Time.
• Attention.
• Trust.

Today, give something that costs you something.

Not for recognition.

But out of love.

Closing Prayer

Lord,
Teach me to give not from abundance alone, but from trust.
Help me to offer what I have with sincerity and humility.
Free me from the need to impress or to be seen.
Shape my heart into one that gives willingly and joyfully, even in small ways.
Receive my offerings, however simple they may be, and use them for Your purposes.
And let my generosity reflect my trust in You above all things.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
