Forgive From the Heart

Matthew 18:32–33 (LXX) · 2026-03-24

Jesus teaches that forgiveness is not optional for those who have received mercy—it is the natural outflow of a transformed heart.

Scripture Reading

32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:

33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

Devotional Reflection

Forgiveness isn’t a single moment.

It’s a way of living.

And Christ makes something clear:

We cannot receive mercy without becoming people of mercy.

In today’s reading, Jesus continues His teaching with a parable—

a story of mercy given, and mercy withheld.

It invites us to examine not just what we’ve received, but what we’re willing to give.

The servant was forgiven much.

But he refused to forgive.

The problem was not his debt.

It was his heart.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting.

It doesn’t excuse wrongdoing.

But it releases the burden of holding onto the offense.

Today, release one grievance.

Even if it is small.

Even if it is incomplete.

Forgiveness begins in intention.

Closing Prayer

Lord,
You have forgiven me more than I can fully understand.
Teach me to extend that same mercy to others.
Soften my heart where it has become hardened by hurt.
Release me from the weight of resentment and the desire to hold onto past wrongs.
Give me the strength to forgive, not out of obligation, but out of love.
And where forgiveness feels difficult, begin the work within me patiently and gently.
Let Your mercy flow through my life, so that I may become a reflection of Your grace to others.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
