Growth is often misunderstood.
We tend to think it means adding more to our lives.
More knowledge.
More discipline.
More accomplishments.
But throughout the Scriptures,
God often speaks of growth in a very different way.
Sometimes growth begins with letting go.
The farmer knows that a seed must first be buried before it bears fruit.
Jesus taught that a grain of wheat must fall into the earth and die if it is to produce an abundant harvest.
The Christian life follows that same pattern.
Before there is resurrection,
there is the cross.
Before there is new life,
there is surrender.
That’s the path Paul describes in the final words of today’s verse.

10 That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.
Devotional Reflection
When Paul speaks of being “made conformable unto His death,”
he’s not longing for suffering for its own sake.
He is describing a life that increasingly takes the shape of Christ’s own life.
Jesus humbled Himself.
He obeyed the Father completely.
He laid aside His own will and embraced the Father’s purpose,
even when it led to the cross.
Paul desires that same spirit of surrender.
The cross becomes the pattern for every disciple.
Each day we are invited to put to death selfish ambition.
To forgive instead of seeking revenge.
To choose humility over pride.
To love when it’s difficult.
To obey when it’s costly.
Little by little,
the old self gives way to the life of Christ within us.
Most of us will never be called to lay down our lives in martyrdom.
But every one of us is called to lay down our lives in faithfulness.
There are countless quiet opportunities each day.
Holding our tongue when anger rises.
Offering kindness when it’s undeserved.
Choosing integrity when compromise would be easier.
Serving without expecting recognition.
These hidden acts of obedience may seem small.
Yet they’re the places where Christ quietly shapes our hearts.
Every time we surrender our own way for His,
we become a little more like Him.
And every act of surrender
makes room for His life to shine more clearly through ours.
Today,
ask the Lord to show you one place where He is inviting you to surrender.
Perhaps it’s an anxious thought you continue to carry.
Perhaps it’s a resentment you have held onto.
Perhaps it’s a desire to be noticed or praised.
Don’t be afraid of what God asks you to lay down.
He never removes something good without offering something greater.
The cross is never the end of the story.
It’s always the doorway to deeper life in Christ.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You did not cling to Your own will,
but humbled Yourself in perfect obedience to the Father.
Teach me to follow in Your footsteps.
When my pride rises,
grant me humility.
When I seek my own way,
lead me back to Yours.
Give me the courage to surrender whatever keeps me from growing into Your likeness.
Help me to see that every act of faithful obedience,
no matter how small,
is an opportunity to become more like You.
Shape my heart after the pattern of the cross,
so that Your love,
Your patience,
and Your gentleness may become increasingly visible in my life.
And as I learn to die daily to myself,
fill me with the joy of Your risen life,
until the day I see You face to face.
