Most of us would gladly accept a life
filled with blessings,
victories,
and peace.
If given the choice,
we would naturally avoid suffering whenever possible.
Yet throughout the New Testament,
we find an unexpected truth.
God often accomplishes His deepest work in us
during seasons we would never choose for ourselves.
It’s in hardship that our faith is refined.
In weakness that we learn to depend upon His strength.
And in sorrow
that we often experience His presence most profoundly.
Paul understood this.
As he spoke of knowing Christ,
he didn’t separate the joy of the resurrection
from the reality of the cross.
He longed to know both.
Scripture Reading
10 That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.
Devotional Reflection
When Paul speaks of “the fellowship of His sufferings,”
he’s not suggesting that suffering has value simply because it’s painful.
Rather,
he’s describing the deep communion that can be found with Christ
when we faithfully endure life’s trials.
Jesus Himself entered fully into human suffering.
He knew rejection.
Fatigue.
Grief.
Loneliness.
Betrayal.
Physical pain.
Because He has walked that road,
He meets us with perfect compassion
when we face our own burdens.
Our suffering does not separate us from Him.
It often becomes the place
where we experience His nearness most clearly.
There are moments when pain makes us feel isolated.
We wonder if anyone truly understands what we’re carrying.
But the Christian never suffers alone.
The Lord who bore the cross walks beside us.
He doesn’t always remove the trial immediately.
Sometimes He calms the storm.
Other times,
He strengthens us to endure it.
In either case,
His promise remains the same:
“I will never leave thee,
nor forsake thee.”
The fellowship Paul describes
is the quiet assurance that Christ is present,
even when life is difficult.
His presence doesn’t erase our pain.
It transforms the way we carry it.
Today,
if you’re walking through a season of difficulty,
don’t hide your struggles from the Lord.
Bring them honestly before Him.
Tell Him your fears.
Your disappointments.
Your questions.
Then trust that He hears every prayer.
If someone around you is suffering,
remember that one of the greatest gifts you can offer
is simply your presence.
Just as Christ draws near to us,
we’re called to draw near to one another.
Compassion is one of the clearest reflections
of the heart of Christ.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You know every sorrow that weighs upon the human heart.
You carried the cross for the salvation of the world,
and You understand every tear I have ever shed.
Thank You for never abandoning me in my moments of weakness.
When my faith is tested,
help me to remember that You are near.
Give me courage to endure with hope,
patience to trust Your perfect timing,
and compassion for others who are carrying heavy burdens.
May my trials draw me closer to You rather than farther away.
And as I learn to share in Your sufferings,
shape my heart to become more like Yours—
full of mercy,
steadfast in love,
and confident in the Father’s faithfulness.
For You are with me in every valley,
You strengthen me through every trial,
and You will one day wipe away every tear.
To You be glory,
together with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
now and ever and unto ages of ages.
Amen.
