The Excellency of the Knowledge of Christ Jesus

Philippians 3:8 · 2026-07-17

Paul reminds us that nothing compares to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ, whose presence transforms every earthly gain into something secondary to the greatest treasure of all.

There are moments in life

when we discover something so valuable

that everything else suddenly seems less important.

A person we love.

A lifelong calling.

A truth that changes the way we see the world.

When that happens,

our priorities begin to shift.

Not because someone tells us they should.

But because we’ve found something better.

That is exactly what happened to Paul.

Yesterday,

he told us that everything he once counted as gain

had become loss for Christ.

Today,

he explains why.

It wasn’t because those things had no value.

It was because he had discovered a treasure

of infinitely greater worth.

Scripture Reading

8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.

Devotional Reflection

Paul’s language is remarkably strong.

He says he counts all things as loss.

Why?

Because of “the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Notice that Paul is not speaking merely about knowing facts concerning Christ.

He is speaking about knowing Christ Himself.

There is a profound difference.

One is information.

The other is relationship.

Paul had spent years studying the Scriptures.

Yet everything changed when he encountered the risen Lord.

From that day forward,

knowing Christ became the defining pursuit of his life.

Everything else was measured against that one incomparable treasure.

Our hearts are always searching for something.

We look for satisfaction in success.

In possessions.

In recognition.

In security.

Many of these things are good gifts from God.

But none of them were created to satisfy the deepest longing of the human soul.

That longing was created for God Himself.

Saint Augustine expressed it beautifully when he wrote,

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”

The closer we draw to Christ,

the more we discover that He is not merely one blessing among many.

He is the source from which every true blessing flows.

Knowing Him is not simply part of the Christian life.

It is the Christian life.

Today,

enjoy the good gifts God has placed in your life.

Give thanks for your family.

Your friends.

Your daily bread.

Your work.

Your health.

But don’t stop there.

Let every blessing lead your heart back to the One who gave it.

Seek the Giver more than the gifts.

Spend a few quiet moments simply enjoying the Lord’s presence.

Not asking for anything.

Not trying to accomplish anything.

Simply resting in the joy of belonging to Him.

For there is no greater privilege than to know Christ,

and to be known by Him.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You are the treasure beyond all treasures.

Every good gift I have received comes from Your loving hand,

yet even those gifts cannot compare with the joy of knowing You.

Draw me ever closer to Yourself.

When my heart begins to chase things that cannot satisfy,

gently call me back.

Teach me to delight in Your presence.

To hunger for Your Word.

To recognize Your voice.

And to walk with You each day as a beloved disciple.

May I never become so occupied with the blessings of life that I lose sight of the Blesser.

For You alone are the pearl of great price,

the treasure hidden in the field,

the Shepherd of my soul,

and the joy of my heart.

To You be all glory,

together with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Amen.
