What Things Were Gain to Me

Philippians 3:7 · 2026-07-16

Paul reminds us that every earthly accomplishment fades beside the surpassing worth of knowing Christ, our greatest treasure and lasting joy.

Have you ever looked back on your life

and realized that something you once thought was incredibly important

no longer held the same value?

Perhaps it was a possession.

A goal.

An achievement.

At one time,

it seemed worth pursuing at all costs.

But with time came perspective.

What once appeared so valuable

gradually lost its place.

Paul experienced a change far greater than that.

Everything he had spent his life building—

his reputation,

his accomplishments,

his standing among his peers—

was suddenly viewed through the light of Christ.

And once he encountered Jesus,

he could never measure success the same way again.

Scripture Reading

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

Devotional Reflection

Paul doesn’t say that his former accomplishments disappeared.

They were still part of his story.

But they no longer occupied the highest place in his heart.

The scales had changed.

What once seemed like gain,

he now considered loss,

because he had found something infinitely greater.

Knowing Christ transformed the way Paul evaluated everything else.

The Gospel doesn’t merely add Christ to our list of priorities.

It reshapes the entire list.

When Christ becomes our greatest treasure,

everything else finds its proper place beneath Him.

Jesus said,

“Where your treasure is,

there will your heart be also.”

Our hearts naturally follow what we value most.

That’s why it is so important to ask ourselves from time to time,

“What am I truly pursuing?”

There is nothing wrong with meaningful work.

With caring for our families.

With using the gifts God has given us.

But if any of those things become our ultimate treasure,

they will eventually disappoint us.

Only Christ can bear the weight of our deepest hopes.

Only His love remains when everything else changes.

The more we treasure Him,

the freer we become from clinging to things that cannot last.

Today,

spend a few quiet moments reflecting on what has occupied your heart this week.

What has captured most of your attention?

What has shaped your decisions?

What has brought you the greatest concern?

Bring those things before the Lord.

Ask Him to help you love every good gift

without allowing it to take His place.

When Christ is first,

everything else can be received with gratitude

instead of grasped with anxiety.

He is not asking us to love our blessings less.

He is inviting us to love Him more.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You are the greatest treasure my heart could ever find.

Forgive me for the times I become captivated by things that cannot truly satisfy.

Too easily I chase what is temporary,

while neglecting what is eternal.

Lift my eyes to You again.

Teach me to value what You value.

To seek what lasts.

To rejoice more in Your presence than in my accomplishments.

May every blessing I receive lead me to greater gratitude,

never greater pride.

And when I am tempted to cling too tightly to the things of this world,

gently loosen my grip,

so that my hands—and my heart—remain open to You.

For nothing I possess compares with the gift of knowing Christ,

and nothing I surrender for His sake is ever truly lost.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
