My Brother, and Companion in Labour

Philippians 2:25 · 2026-07-06

Paul's description of Epaphroditus reminds us that God values faithful servants who quietly encourage, support, and strengthen others through lives of humble devotion.

Some people are remembered for standing in the spotlight.

Others quietly serve behind the scenes.

They encourage.

They support.

They carry burdens that few people ever notice.

Scripture reminds us that both kinds of service matter.

As Paul continues his letter to the Philippians,

he introduces us to a man named Epaphroditus.

He’s not as well known as Peter.

Or John.

Or even Timothy.

Yet the words Paul uses to describe him

reveal a life of extraordinary faithfulness.

A life devoted to Christ.

A life devoted to serving others.

And in honoring Epaphroditus,

Paul reminds us

that God never overlooks faithful servants.

Scripture Reading

25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellow soldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

Devotional Reflection

Paul gives Epaphroditus four beautiful descriptions.

My brother.

Companion in labour.

Fellow soldier.

Your messenger.

Each one tells us something about the Christian life.

We belong to one family.

We work together in the Gospel.

We stand together in spiritual battles.

And we serve one another with the gifts God has given us.

Epaphroditus was not praised for seeking recognition.

He was honored because he was faithful.

His life reminds us

that God’s Kingdom is built by countless believers

who quietly love,

serve,

and persevere day after day.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person

is simply our presence.

To sit beside someone who is grieving.

To visit someone who is lonely.

To encourage someone who has grown weary.

Epaphroditus had been sent to care for Paul’s needs.

He brought more than practical help.

He brought companionship.

In a world that often feels hurried and distracted,

faithful presence is a precious gift.

When we make time for others,

we reflect the heart of Christ,

who never hurried past those who needed His love.

Today,

think of someone who may simply need to know they are not alone.

A phone call.

A visit.

A handwritten note.

A quiet conversation.

These small acts may seem ordinary.

But they often become the very means through which God strengthens another person’s heart.

Do not underestimate the ministry of showing up.

Sometimes the greatest expression of love

is simply being there.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the faithful people who have walked beside me.

For those who have encouraged me,

prayed for me,

listened to me,

and quietly helped carry my burdens.

Bless them for their kindness.

Teach me to become that kind of friend to others.

Help me notice those who need encouragement.

Give me a willing heart to serve without seeking recognition.

May I never become so busy that I overlook the opportunity to simply be present with someone who is hurting.

And may my life reflect the quiet faithfulness of Christ,

who came alongside us,

shared in our humanity,

and never leaves those who belong to Him.

May I serve with joy,

love with sincerity,

and remain faithful in whatever You place before me.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
