I Trust to Come Shortly

Philippians 2:24 · 2026-07-05

Paul reminds us that Christian confidence is not found in knowing the future, but in trusting the Lord who faithfully holds it.

There’s a difference between confidence and presumption.

Presumption says,

“I know exactly what will happen.”

Confidence says,

“I know the One who holds tomorrow.”

On the surface,

Paul had every reason to be uncertain.

He was writing from prison.

He didn’t know when he would be released.

He didn’t know what the coming days would bring.

Yet he continued to make plans.

Not with pride.

Not with certainty in himself.

But with confidence in the Lord.

His hope rested,

not in changing circumstances,

but in the unchanging faithfulness of Christ.

Scripture Reading

24 But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.

Devotional Reflection

Notice where Paul places his confidence.

“I trust in the Lord.”

He doesn’t trust in favorable circumstances.

He doesn’t trust in the decisions of earthly rulers.

He doesn’t even trust in his own wisdom.

His confidence rests entirely in Christ.

This is the kind of confidence God invites us to have.

Not a confidence that assumes life will always unfold according to our plans.

But a confidence that knows God is faithful,

whatever tomorrow may bring.

Faith does not remove uncertainty.

It gives us Someone trustworthy in the midst of it.

Most of us enjoy knowing what comes next.

We make calendars.

Schedules.

Lists.

We plan vacations,

family gatherings,

and important milestones.

There’s wisdom in preparing for the future.

But there’s also wisdom in remembering that every tomorrow belongs to God.

When we hold our plans too tightly,

disappointment can easily become discouragement.

When we place them in God’s hands,

we discover a deeper peace.

The future no longer depends upon our ability to control every outcome.

It rests in the hands of a loving Father

who sees the end from the beginning.

Today,

think about something that lies ahead.

A meeting.

A decision.

A conversation.

A season of life you cannot yet fully see.

Pray over it.

Prepare wisely.

Then release it into God’s care.

Walk faithfully through the responsibilities of today,

trusting that when tomorrow arrives,

the Lord will already be there,

providing the grace you need for that moment.

One faithful step is enough.

God will guide the next one when the time comes.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

Tomorrow belongs to You.

Long before I awaken,

You are already there.

Long before I understand what lies ahead,

Your wisdom has prepared the way.

Thank You that I do not have to carry the weight of the future upon my shoulders.

Teach me to plan with humility,

to hope with confidence,

and to trust without fear.

Keep me faithful in today’s responsibilities,

knowing that today’s obedience is the best preparation for tomorrow.

And whatever the future holds,

may I never lose sight of the One who holds me.

For my confidence is not found in knowing what comes next,

but in knowing You.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
