It’s possible to be surrounded by people,
and still long to be with those you love.
Distance has a way of revealing what matters most.
A family separated by work.
Friends living in different places.
A church praying for someone far from home.
Love doesn’t disappear simply because miles stand in between.
As Paul continues speaking about Epaphroditus,
we discover something beautiful about his heart.
He wasn’t eager to return home because the journey had been difficult.
He longed to return
because he loved the people who’d sent him.
His affection for them reflected the kind of love
that Christ plants within His people.
Scripture Reading
26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
Devotional Reflection
At first,
Paul’s words may seem surprising.
Epaphroditus had been seriously ill.
Yet his greatest concern was not for himself.
He was troubled
because the Philippians had heard about his illness.
He didn’t want them to carry unnecessary worry.
That’s the heart of Christian love.
It looks beyond itself.
It notices the burdens of others.
It seeks to comfort
rather than simply to be comforted.
This kind of love does not come naturally.
It grows as our hearts become more like the heart of Christ.
There’s something deeply comforting
about knowing someone truly cares.
A message asking,
“How are you doing?”
A prayer offered without being asked.
A visit during a difficult season.
These simple expressions of love
remind us
that we’re not alone.
The Church has always been more than a gathering of people.
It’s a family.
When one member rejoices,
we rejoice together.
When one member suffers,
we bear that burden together.
God often strengthens us
through the compassion of His people.
Today,
think of someone you haven’t spoken with in a while.
Perhaps they’ve been on your mind.
Perhaps they’re walking through a difficult season.
Take a few moments to reach out.
You don’t need to have all the right words.
A simple reminder
that someone is remembered,
loved,
and prayed for
can become a great encouragement.
Small acts of care often reveal the love of Christ in powerful ways.
Closing Prayer
Merciful Father,
Thank You for making us part of Your family.
Thank You that in Christ we are never meant to walk alone.
Give me a heart that notices the needs of others before my own.
Teach me to love with sincerity,
to listen with compassion,
and to encourage without hesitation.
Bring to my mind those who are lonely,
weary,
or carrying burdens too heavy to bear by themselves.
Use me as an instrument of Your comfort.
And as others have shown Your love to me,
help me faithfully share that same love with those You place along my path.
May our care for one another reflect the love of Christ,
who bears our burdens,
heals our wounds,
and never ceases to watch over His people.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
