Certain Men Cleaved Unto Him

Acts 17:34 · 2026-06-09

Faith begins when we move from merely hearing the truth to drawing near to Christ and allowing His Word to take root in our hearts.

Paul’s time in Athens is coming to a close.

He’s stood before philosophers.

Scholars.

And seekers of every kind.

He has proclaimed the Creator.

The resurrection.

Repentance.

And the coming judgment.

The responses have varied.

Some mocked.

Some wanted to hear more.

Yet Luke ends this account by drawing our attention to something else.

Not the crowd.

Not the critics.

Not even the curious.

He focuses on those who believed.

Those who heard the message and chose to draw near.

And in doing so, they remind us where faith truly begins.

Scripture Reading

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Devotional Reflection

Luke could have ended the story with the mockers.

He could’ve focused on the debates.

Instead, he highlights those who believed.

The phrase is striking.

Certain men clave unto him.

They drew near.

They remained.

They listened.

Faith is more than hearing truth.

Many people heard Paul speak that day.

Faith began when some chose to stay near the message instead of walking away from it.

The same remains true today.

The Lord invites us not merely to hear His voice,

but to draw near to Him.

We hear many things throughout our lives.

Advice.

Opinions.

Ideas.

Most pass through our minds and quickly disappear.

But occasionally, something stays with us.

Something takes hold.

Something refuses to let us go.

For Dionysius.

For Damaris.

And for the others who believed,

the message of Christ became that truth.

They didn’t simply hear Paul’s words.

They embraced them.

Faith often begins in exactly that way.

A moment when the truth moves from our ears to our hearts.

A moment when we stop observing Christ from a distance and begin following Him more closely.

Today, consider what helps you remain close to Christ.

Prayer.

Scripture.

Worship.

Quiet moments of reflection.

These aren’t merely religious habits.

They’re ways of drawing near to the One who loves us.

Don’t be content simply to hear about Christ.

Remain near Him.

Stay close to His Word.

Stay close to His presence.

And allow His truth to take deeper root within your heart.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

I thank You for the people who first shared the Gospel with me.

For those who remained faithful.

For those who planted seeds of truth.

And for those who encouraged me to draw closer to You.

Help me not to be content with merely hearing Your Word.

Help me to hold fast to it.

When distractions pull at my attention, draw me back to Your presence.

When doubts arise, strengthen my faith.

When the voices of the world grow loud, help me listen for Your voice above all others.

Teach me to remain near to You.

To trust You.

To follow You.

And to allow Your truth to shape my life more each day.

May my faith continue to grow, and may my heart remain firmly rooted in Christ.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
