He Hath Appointed a Day

Acts 17:31 · 2026-06-05

History is moving toward a day appointed by God, reminding us that our lives matter and that every choice is lived before His righteous judgment.

Paul continues speaking to the people of Athens.

He’s told them about the Creator.

The God who gives life and breath to all.

The God who calls every person everywhere to repent.

Now Paul explains why that call is so important.

History is not moving aimlessly.

The world is not drifting without direction.

God has established a purpose.

A destination.

A day toward which all things are moving.

And Paul’s words remind us that our lives matter because they’re lived before a God who sees all things.

Scripture Reading

31 Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained.

Devotional Reflection

Paul says that God has appointed a day.

Not a possibility.

Not a suggestion.

A day.

A moment known by God when the world will be judged in righteousness.

For many people, judgment sounds frightening.

Yet notice the word Paul uses.

Righteousness.

God’s judgment is not careless.

Not unfair.

Not influenced by power, wealth, or appearance.

The Judge of all the earth sees perfectly.

He knows every hidden act.

Every wound.

Every injustice.

Every faithful deed that no one else noticed.

And His judgment will be perfectly right.

It is easy to become focused only on today.

The next task.

The next responsibility.

The next problem that demands our attention.

Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that our lives are part of a much larger story.

The choices we make matter.

The words we speak matter.

The way we treat others matters.

Not because we’re trying to earn God’s love.

But because our lives are moving toward a day when all things will be revealed.

Remembering that day can help us live differently today.

With greater integrity.

Greater compassion.

And greater faithfulness.

Today, consider whether there is any area of your life that you would rather keep hidden.

A habit.

An attitude.

A decision.

Bring it before the Lord.

Invite His light into that place.

God doesn’t reveal things in order to shame us.

He reveals them so that He can heal us.

Live today as someone who belongs to the light.

As someone preparing— not for fear, but for a joyful meeting with Christ.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

At times I become consumed by the concerns of this present moment.

I focus on what is urgent and lose sight of what is eternal.

Help me remember that my life is lived before You.

Teach me to walk with integrity, whether others are watching or not.

Give me a heart that seeks what is right, a spirit that welcomes Your correction, and a faith that remains steady through every season.

When I am tempted to hide from Your truth, draw me into Your light.

When I grow discouraged by the brokenness of this world, remind me that You are the righteous Judge who sees all things.

And help me live each day in a way that honors You, looking forward with hope to the fulfillment of Your perfect will.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
