They Ministered to the Lord

Acts 13:2 · 2026-05-26

Before the Church moves outward in mission, the believers first turn their hearts toward God in worship, prayer, and devotion.

The Church continues to grow.

New believers are gathering.

Leaders are emerging.

The Gospel is preparing to spread even farther.

But before Barnabas and Saul are sent out on mission, Scripture pauses to show us something foundational.

The believers are not rushing ahead.

They are worshipping.

Praying.

Fasting.

Their attention is first turned toward God Himself.

And it’s in that atmosphere of devotion that the Holy Spirit begins to speak.

Scripture Reading

2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate Me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

Devotional Reflection

This is important.

The calling comes while they are ministering to the Lord.

Not while striving.

Not while forcing direction.

They begin with worship.

Because in the Christian life, purpose flows out of presence.

We often want guidance immediately.

But God frequently speaks in places of quiet devotion and attentiveness.

It’s easy to become focused only on tasks.

What needs to be done.

What decision comes next.

What responsibility is waiting.

But before asking, “What should I do?” there’s another question:

“Am I spending time with God Himself?”

The believers in Antioch weren’t merely seeking instruction.

They were ministering to the Lord.

Their hearts were turned toward Him.

And from that place, clarity emerged.

Today, make room not only for requests—

but for presence.

Pause.

Pray.

Be still before God.

Worship Him not merely for what He gives,

but for who He is.

And as you draw near, listen.

Because some direction only becomes clear when the heart grows quiet enough to hear it.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

In the midst of responsibilities and distractions, draw my attention back to You.

Teach me not to seek only answers, but Your presence.

Help me to spend time with You not merely out of obligation, but out of love and reverence.

Quiet the noise within me.

Slow my hurried thoughts.

Create within me a heart that longs to worship, to listen, and to remain near to You.

And as I minister to You in prayer and devotion, guide my steps in the way You desire.

Let purpose flow from presence, and let every part of my life be shaped by time spent with You.

Because the clearest direction often comes from hearts that have learned to be still before You.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
