Now I Know of a Surety

Acts 12:11 · 2026-05-25

Looking back, Peter recognizes God’s faithful deliverance, reminding us that clarity about God’s work often comes after the storm has passed.

Peter has been imprisoned.

The Church has been praying earnestly.

The situation felt uncertain and dangerous.

Then, in the middle of the night, everything changes.

Chains fall away.

Doors open.

Peter is led out to safety.

And at first, it hardly feels real.

But when he finally pauses and understands what has happened, he speaks words filled with wonder and gratitude.

Scripture Reading

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

Devotional Reflection

Peter had been led step by step through the night.

But only afterward does the full realization settle in.

“Now I know of a surety.”

This happens in our lives as well.

In the middle of difficulty, we may feel confused, uncertain, or overwhelmed.

But later, when we look back, we begin to see how God carried us through moments we could not have navigated alone.

We usually want understanding in the moment.

We want immediate certainty.

Immediate answers.

Immediate reassurance.

But many times, clarity comes later.

Only after the storm begins to pass do we recognize the quiet ways God was present all along.

The closed door that protected us.

The unexpected help.

The strength we didn’t know we had.

Grace often becomes clearest in hindsight.

Today, take a moment to reflect.

Where has God already carried you through something difficult?

What prayers has He answered— perhaps differently than expected, but faithfully nonetheless?

Let remembrance strengthen your trust.

Because the God who has been faithful before remains faithful now.

And even when you cannot yet see the full picture, He’s still leading you step by step.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

There have been moments in my life when I could not clearly see what You were doing.

In the middle of uncertainty, fear, or difficulty, I struggled to understand how things would unfold.

Yet looking back, I can see Your hand more clearly.

Thank You for the ways You have protected, guided, and sustained me— even when I did not fully recognize it at the time.

Help me remember Your faithfulness when new challenges arise.

When I feel uncertain, steady my heart with the memory of Your care.

When I cannot yet see the outcome, teach me to trust the One who is leading me step by step.

And give me eyes to recognize Your presence not only after deliverance comes, but even while I am still walking through the night.

Because You remain near in every season.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
