What Doth Hinder Me?

Acts 8:36 (LXX) · 2026-05-02

Understanding leads to a moment of decision. When truth reaches the heart, the question is no longer ‘Do I understand?’ but ‘What is holding me back?’

Scripture Reading

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

Devotional Reflection

Philip has shared the message.
The Ethiopian official has listened.
He’s understood.
He’s seen Christ revealed in the Scriptures.

And now, something shifts.

The conversation moves
from understanding…
to action.

Because there comes a moment
when truth is no longer something we consider.

It becomes something we respond to.

“What doth hinder me?”

There is no hesitation here.

No delay.
No overthinking.

Just a simple, honest question.

This is what happens
when understanding reaches the heart.

It moves us forward.

Not perfectly.
Not with every detail resolved.

But with willingness.

Often, we respond differently.

We pause.
We hesitate.
We wait for a better time.

We tell ourselves:

“Later.”
“When I feel ready.”
“When I understand more.”

But sometimes, those delays
become distance.

And the invitation remains:

What’s truly holding you back?

Today, consider your next step.

Not the entire journey.

Just the next step.

Is there something you know
God is calling you toward?

A decision to make?
A habit to release?
A commitment to begin?

Instead of asking, “Am I ready?”

ask:

“What’s hindering me?”

And then… move forward.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

There are moments when I know the truth,
yet hesitate to act on it.

I see the next step,
but I hold back—
waiting for clarity,
waiting for comfort,
waiting for the right moment.

Show me what is truly holding me back.

If it is fear,
give me courage.

If it is doubt,
strengthen my trust.

If it is hesitation,
lead me forward with clarity.

Teach me that obedience
does not require perfect readiness—
only a willing heart.

And when You place the next step before me,
help me to take it
without delay.

Because every step toward You
is a step into life.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
