A Tree and Its Fruit

Matthew 7:18–20 (LXX) · 2026-03-19

Christ deepens His teaching on fruit by revealing that true transformation begins within the heart, not merely in outward behavior.

Scripture Reading

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Devotional Reflection

Yesterday we heard Christ teach that a tree is known by its fruit.

Today He continues that image — pushing us deeper.

Because the issue isn’t simply behavior.

It’s the condition of the heart.

Outward change without inward renewal can’t last.

We can imitate kindness for a time.
We can pretend patience for a moment.

But eventually the heart reveals itself.

This is why Lent focuses so deeply on repentance.

The goal is not temporary behavior.

It’s a new heart.

Sometimes we get discouraged when we don’t see quick change.

But God often works slowly, beneath the surface.

Roots deepen long before fruit appears.

Faithfulness in prayer and repentance prepares the soil of the soul.

Today, allow yourself patience in the process of spiritual growth.

Don’t demand immediate perfection.

Instead, remain faithful in the practices that nourish the heart.

God’s work in the soul is steady and faithful.

Closing Prayer

Lord,
Transform my heart from within.
Remove what is corrupt and plant what is good.
Where pride has taken root, replace it with humility.
Where impatience grows, plant the seeds of peace.
Give me patience as You continue Your work in my life.
Help me trust that Your shaping of my heart is steady and faithful, even when I cannot yet see the fruit.
And let the fruit of Your Spirit grow within me—love, patience, kindness, and mercy.
May my life reflect the goodness You are cultivating in my soul.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
