Do All Things Without Murmurings and Disputings

Philippians 2:14 · 2026-06-26

Paul reminds us that the attitudes we cultivate in everyday frustrations shape our hearts. Gratitude and trust become a quiet witness to the peace found in Christ.

Some habits are easy to recognize.

Others quietly become part of our daily lives.

We may not even notice them.

A sigh when plans change.

A complaint when things become inconvenient.

A critical word spoken without much thought.

Before long, those small responses can begin to shape our hearts.

Paul understood that the way we respond to ordinary frustrations says a great deal about the condition of our souls.

That’s why he gives the Philippians a simple instruction.

One that is easy to read.

Yet often difficult to practice.

Scripture Reading

14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings.

Devotional Reflection

Paul is not telling believers to pretend life is easy.

He is not asking them to ignore hardship.

The Philippians faced real struggles.

Real opposition.

Real uncertainty.

Yet even in those circumstances,

Paul calls them to resist a spirit of complaining and arguing.

Why?

Because our attitude reveals something about where our trust is placed.

A heart that continually murmurs is often focused on what it lacks.

A heart that trusts God learns to look beyond the present moment.

It begins to see His faithfulness, even in difficult seasons.

Jesus taught that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Our words often reveal what’s happening deep within us.

When gratitude fills the heart,

thankfulness naturally follows.

When peace fills the heart,

gentleness becomes easier.

This does not mean we never express grief.

Or ask honest questions.

The Psalms are filled with both.

But there is a difference between bringing our burdens to God

and allowing a spirit of constant complaint to take root within us.

One draws us closer to Him.

The other slowly pulls us away.

Today,

pay attention to your words.

When something doesn’t go as planned,

pause before you respond.

Instead of speaking your first frustration,

offer a quiet prayer.

Instead of dwelling on what has gone wrong,

thank God for one thing that remains unchanged.

His love.

His mercy.

His presence.

Small choices like these gradually shape our hearts.

And over time,

they help us become people whose peace points others toward Christ.

Closing Prayer

Gracious Father,

Thank You for Your patience with me.

You continue to provide for me,

guide me,

and remain faithful,

even when I fail to notice the countless ways You care for me.

Fill my heart with gratitude.

Teach me to see Your blessings in ordinary moments.

Guard my tongue from careless words that wound,

discourage,

or complain.

Instead, let my words bring peace,

encouragement,

and hope.

When challenges come,

help me remember that You are still at work.

May my attitude reflect confidence in Your goodness,

and may my life quietly bear witness to the joy that is found in trusting You.

In the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
