There are times when spiritual growth can feel overwhelming.
We see areas where we need to change.
Habits we need to break.
Virtues we need to develop.
And sometimes the distance between where we are and where we want to be can seem discouraging.
Yet Scripture offers a wonderful reminder.
We are not left to accomplish this journey alone.
The God who calls us is also the God who helps us.
The God who commands us to grow is also the God who supplies the strength to do so.
Paul understood this deeply.
And in today’s Scripture reading, he reveals a truth that brings both comfort and hope.
Scripture Reading
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.
Devotional Reflection
Paul tells us something remarkable.
God is at work in you.
Not merely around you.
Not merely ahead of you.
In you.
He works in our desires.
He works in our thoughts.
He works in our decisions.
He works in our actions.
Even the desire to seek Him is evidence of His grace at work within us.
This doesn’t eliminate our responsibility.
But it reminds us that spiritual growth is not a solo effort.
God is not standing at a distance waiting for us to improve ourselves.
He’s actively involved in the process.
Guiding.
Strengthening.
Transforming.
Much of God’s work happens beneath the surface.
A tree grows long before its growth becomes obvious.
Roots deepen where no one can see them.
Strength develops quietly.
The same is often true in our spiritual lives.
There are seasons when we wonder whether anything is changing.
Whether our prayers matter.
Whether our efforts are making a difference.
Yet God is often doing His most important work in places hidden from view.
A softened heart.
A growing patience.
A deeper trust.
A greater dependence upon Him.
The changes may be gradual.
But they are real.
And God remains faithful to His work.
Today, instead of focusing only on what still needs to change,
take a moment to notice where God may already be working.
Perhaps your response to difficulty is different than it once was.
Perhaps your desire for prayer has grown.
Perhaps your trust is stronger than it used to be.
Give thanks for those signs of grace.
Then continue to cooperate with what God is doing.
Pray.
Listen.
Obey.
Trust.
The Lord is not finished with you.
And He is actively working even now.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the work You’re doing within me.
So often I focus on my shortcomings,
my weaknesses,
and the areas where I still need to grow.
Yet today I am reminded that You have not abandoned the work You began.
You are present.
You are active.
And You are faithful.
Thank You for every unseen way You are shaping my heart.
For every temptation resisted.
For every lesson learned.
For every quiet moment when Your grace has guided me forward.
Help me trust Your work even when I cannot fully see it.
Give me the willingness to follow where You lead,
the courage to obey what You reveal,
and the patience to grow according to Your timing.
May I never forget that my hope rests not in my own strength,
but in Your faithful presence at work within me.
In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
