The world has its own definition of greatness.
Power.
Status.
Recognition.
The ability to influence others.
Many people spend their lives pursuing these things.
Trying to climb higher.
Acquire more.
Or make a name for themselves.
Yet when Paul points us to Jesus Christ,
he presents a very different picture.
The One who possessed all glory.
All authority.
And all honor.
Did not cling to His position.
Instead, He chose the path of humility.
And in doing so,
He revealed the true character of God.
Scripture Reading
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.
Devotional Reflection
Paul begins by reminding us who Jesus is.
Before speaking of His humility,
he speaks of His glory.
Christ wasn’t merely a good teacher.
Not merely a prophet.
Not merely a wise man.
He was and is God.
The eternal Son.
Equal with the Father.
Sharing in the fullness of divine glory.
This makes what follows in the passage
even more remarkable.
The One who possessed all things
willingly chose the path of humility.
The One who deserved all honor
willingly entered a world marked by suffering.
His humility wasn’t born from weakness.
It flowed from perfect love.
The world often associates humility with weakness.
But Christ shows us something different.
Real strength does not need to prove itself.
Real strength can serve.
Can sacrifice.
Can place the needs of others before its own.
Jesus never lost His authority
when He humbled Himself.
He revealed its true purpose.
His greatness was seen
not in demanding to be served,
but in serving others.
When we follow Christ,
we’re invited into that same pattern.
A life marked not by self-promotion,
but by love.
Not by pride,
but by humility.
Today,
look for an opportunity
to place someone else’s needs
ahead of your own.
Offer patience
when it would be easier
to become frustrated.
Offer kindness
when recognition is unlikely.
Offer help
without expecting anything in return.
These small acts may seem insignificant.
Yet they reflect the heart of Christ.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself.
It’s thinking of yourself less often.
And each act of humble service
becomes a quiet testimony
to the One we follow.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Too often I am concerned with my own desires, my own reputation, and my own comfort.
I want to be noticed.
I want to be appreciated.
I want things to go my way.
Yet when I look at Christ, I see a different path.
I see humility.
I see sacrifice.
I see love freely given.
Help me follow His example.
Teach me to serve without seeking recognition.
To give without expecting reward.
And to love without keeping score.
Shape my heart to reflect the character of Christ.
And may the humility I practice each day point others toward the Savior who humbled Himself for us all.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
