Unto You It Is Given

Philippians 1:29 · 2026-06-15

God can use even seasons of hardship to deepen our faith, strengthen our trust, and draw us closer to Christ.

Most of us readily accept the blessings God gives.

We welcome His provision.

His comfort.

His guidance.

His peace.

But there are other gifts that are harder to recognize.

Difficult circumstances.

Unexpected disappointments.

Seasons of suffering.

These are experiences we would rarely choose for ourselves.

Yet throughout Scripture, God often works through the very things we would prefer to avoid.

Paul understood this well.

Writing from prison, he had learned that God can accomplish His purposes even through hardship.

And in today’s Scripture reading, he offers a perspective that challenges the way we often view suffering.

Scripture Reading

29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake.

Devotional Reflection

Paul says that two things have been given to believers.

The privilege of believing in Christ.

And the privilege of suffering for His sake.

The first is easy to embrace.

The second is much more difficult.

Yet Paul places them side by side.

Not because suffering is pleasant.

Not because pain is desirable.

But because God can use even hardship to deepen our faith.

Trials often reveal what comfort conceals.

They teach us dependence.

Patience.

Perseverance.

And they remind us how deeply we need the Lord.

Very few of us would choose suffering as a teacher.

Yet many of life’s deepest lessons are learned there.

A season of loss may teach compassion.

A season of waiting may teach trust.

A season of weakness may teach humility.

Looking back, we often discover that God was doing important work in us during the very moments we wished would end.

This doesn’t mean we must enjoy suffering.

Nor does it mean we seek it out.

It means we trust that God is able to bring purpose from it.

The Lord wastes nothing that is placed in His hands.

Today, consider a burden you’re carrying.

A challenge.

A disappointment.

A struggle that’s lingered longer than you expected.

Rather than asking only how to escape it,

ask the Lord what He may be teaching you through it.

Bring that burden honestly before Him.

Trust Him with your questions.

Trust Him with your fears.

And trust that His grace is sufficient for whatever you face.

Even difficult roads can become places where we encounter God’s faithfulness.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

In weakness, I sometimes struggle to understand the difficulties I face.

I would rather choose comfort than hardship.

Certainty than waiting.

Ease than struggle.

Yet You often meet me most clearly in the places where I recognize my need for You.

Help me trust You during difficult seasons.

When burdens feel heavy, strengthen me.

When answers seem distant, give me patience.

When suffering tests my faith, help me remain steadfast.

Teach me to see Your hand at work even when circumstances are hard to understand.

And remind me that no trial is beyond Your ability to redeem.

May every challenge draw me closer to Christ, deepen my faith, and increase my trust in Your goodness.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
