In Nothing Terrified by Your Adversaries

Philippians 1:28 · 2026-06-14

Fear loses its power when we remember that our confidence rests not in ourselves, but in the presence and faithfulness of God.

Fear has a way of getting our attention.

A difficult conversation.

An uncertain future.

A challenge we don’t feel prepared to face.

When fear enters our lives, it often tries to convince us that we’re alone.

That the obstacle is too great.

That the burden is too heavy.

The believers in Philippi understood these feelings.

Following Christ was not always easy.

They faced opposition.

Criticism.

And pressure from those who didn’t share their faith.

Yet Paul encourages them not to be overcome by fear.

Instead, he points them toward a confidence rooted in something far greater than their circumstances.

Scripture Reading

28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

Devotional Reflection

Paul doesn’t pretend that adversity is imaginary.

The opposition was real.

The challenges were real.

The risks were real.

Yet he tells the Philippian believers not to be terrified.

Why?

Because their confidence didn’t come from their own strength.

It came from God.

Courage is not the absence of fear.

It is the decision to remain faithful even when fear is present.

The believer’s hope rests in the knowledge that Christ remains Lord regardless of what circumstances may arise.

Fear often speaks loudly.

It magnifies problems.

It imagines worst-case scenarios.

It convinces us that we can’t handle what lies ahead.

Yet fear rarely tells the whole story.

It focuses on obstacles while ignoring God’s faithfulness.

It draws our attention to our weakness while overlooking His strength.

Throughout Scripture, God’s people repeatedly faced situations that seemed overwhelming.

Again and again, they discovered that the Lord was already present before they arrived.

The same remains true for us.

Whatever challenge stands before us today, God is already there.

His presence surrounds the situation.

His wisdom precedes it.

His strength is sufficient for it.

Today, identify one fear that has been occupying your thoughts.

Bring it before the Lord.

Name it honestly.

Offer it to Him in prayer.

Then focus not on the entire journey ahead,

but on the next faithful step.

Trust rarely grows all at once.

It grows one step at a time.

One prayer at a time.

One act of obedience at a time.

And as we continue walking with Christ,

we discover that His presence is greater than our fears.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

When pressure rises, I often allow fear to speak louder than faith.

I focus on the challenges before me, the uncertainties around me, and the things I cannot control.

Yet You remain faithful.

You remain present.

And You remain sovereign over all things.

Help me remember that my confidence is not found in my own strength.

It is found in You.

When fear tries to overwhelm me, steady my heart.

When uncertainty clouds my vision, help me trust Your guidance.

And when I am tempted to retreat, give me courage to take the next faithful step.

Teach me to walk by faith rather than fear, trusting that You are with me in every circumstance.

And may Your peace guard my heart as I continue to follow You.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
