Paul writes the letter to the Philippians from prison.
His freedom has been taken away.
His future remains uncertain.
He doesn’t know exactly what lies ahead.
Yet as he writes, his words are not filled with despair.
They’re filled with confidence. Peace.
An unwavering devotion to Christ.
That’s because Paul has learned something that every believer must eventually discover.
Our circumstances may change.
Our plans may change.
Our seasons of life may change.
But when Christ becomes the center of our lives, we find a purpose that cannot be taken from us.
And that truth is captured in one of the most well-known statements in all of Scripture.
Scripture Reading
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Devotional Reflection
Paul’s words are remarkably simple.
For me to live is Christ.
Not success.
Not comfort.
Not recognition.
Not personal achievement.
Christ.
Everything in Paul’s life revolved around his relationship with the Lord.
His work.
His suffering.
His ministry.
His hopes.
His future.
All of it found its meaning in Christ.
When Christ becomes the center, everything else finds its proper place.
The changing circumstances of life no longer define us.
He does.
Most people organize their lives around something.
A career.
A relationship.
A goal.
A possession.
A dream for the future.
Many of these things are good gifts.
Yet none of them were designed to carry the full weight of our identity.
When they become the center of our lives, we often find ourselves anxious when they’re threatened.
Discouraged when they fail.
Or empty when they finally arrive.
Paul points us toward something greater.
A life anchored in Christ is built upon a foundation that doesn’t shift with circumstances.
His presence remains.
His love remains.
His promises remain.
Today, take a moment to consider what occupies the center of your thoughts.
What receives most of your attention?
What drives your decisions?
What determines your peace?
Bring those questions before the Lord.
Ask Him to help you place Christ at the center once again.
Not simply as one part of your life.
But as the foundation beneath all of it.
The closer we draw to Him, the more everything else begins to find its proper place.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
At times I allow other things to occupy the center of my heart.
I become focused on responsibilities, expectations, and concerns that pull my attention away from You.
Yet none of those things can provide the peace that only You can give.
Help me keep my eyes fixed upon Christ.
When success tempts me to become self-reliant, draw me back to You.
When difficulties tempt me to become discouraged, remind me of Your faithfulness.
Teach me to build my life upon a foundation that cannot be shaken.
May my thoughts, my words, and my actions increasingly reflect Your presence within me.
And may I learn, day by day, what it truly means to say:
“For me to live is Christ.”
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
