As Paul speaks in Athens, he finds himself surrounded by people searching for meaning.
They have philosophies.
Questions.
Ideas about the divine.
Some are sincerely seeking.
Others are curious.
And into that search, Paul offers a remarkable truth.
God is not far away.
He is not hidden behind unreachable barriers.
In fact, every moment of our existence depends upon Him.
Every breath.
Every step.
Every heartbeat.
And with a single sentence, Paul reminds us how close God truly is.
Scripture Reading
28 For in Him we live, and move, and have our being.
Devotional Reflection
Paul doesn’t describe God as distant.
He describes Him as the very source of life itself.
We live in Him.
We move in Him.
We have our being in Him.
This means that God’s presence is not limited to special places or extraordinary moments.
He’s present in ordinary life.
In work.
In rest.
In conversation.
In silence.
Whether we’re aware of it or not, we are continually sustained by His grace.
Human beings often search far and wide for meaning.
We look for fulfillment in achievements.
Possessions.
Recognition.
Control.
Yet the One we seek is often nearer than we realize.
Like fish unaware of the water surrounding them, we can move through life without noticing the God who continually sustains us.
The challenge is not always finding God.
Sometimes it’s becoming aware of the God who’s already near.
Today, pause throughout the day.
Take a breath.
Notice the gift of life itself.
Remember that every moment is upheld by God.
Whether your day is busy or quiet,
joyful or difficult,
He remains present.
Allow that awareness to shape how you move through the day.
Not as someone abandoned to chance,
but as someone living within the care of God.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
It is easy for me to become distracted by the demands of life.
I focus on responsibilities, deadlines, and concerns, and forget how near You truly are.
Yet every breath I take is a gift from You.
Every step I walk is sustained by You.
And every moment of my life rests within Your care.
Open my eyes to Your presence.
Help me to recognize You, not only in extraordinary moments, but in ordinary ones.
Teach me to live with gratitude, knowing that I am never beyond Your sight and never outside Your sustaining love.
When I feel alone, remind me that You are near.
When I feel anxious, steady me with the knowledge that my life is held in Your hands.
And let the awareness of Your presence bring peace to my heart today.
Because in You I live, and move, and have my being.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
