Paul and his companions have been traveling faithfully.
The Gospel is spreading into new places.
New people are listening.
New hearts are being reached.
And among those listening is a woman named Lydia.
Scripture tells us she was already a worshipper of God.
She was listening carefully.
Paying attention.
Open to what was being spoken.
And then, in one quiet phrase, we’re shown the deeper work taking place beneath the surface.
The Lord opened her heart.
Scripture Reading
14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
Devotional Reflection
This is important.
Paul speaks faithfully.
Lydia listens attentively.
But ultimately, it is God who opens the heart.
Spiritual transformation is not merely intellectual.
It’s deeply personal.
There are truths we may hear many times before they finally reach us deeply.
And when God opens the heart, understanding becomes more than information.
It becomes life.
Hearts can close slowly over time.
Through disappointment.
Distraction.
Pride.
Pain.
We may still hear words outwardly while remaining guarded inwardly.
But Lydia reminds us of the beauty of openness.
A receptive heart becomes fertile ground for grace, wisdom, and transformation.
Today, ask God to soften whatever has become hardened within you.
Stay teachable.
Stay attentive.
Stay willing to receive.
Not every truth arrives dramatically.
Sometimes God works quietly, opening the heart little by little through prayer, Scripture, conversation, and daily life.
And often, the deepest changes begin there.
Closing Prayer
Lord,
There are places within me that can become guarded, distracted, or resistant.
At times I listen outwardly while remaining closed inwardly.
Open my heart.
Help me to receive Your truth with humility and sincerity.
Soften whatever has become hardened through fear, disappointment, or my own pride.
Give me a spirit that is attentive, teachable, and willing to grow.
And as I spend time in prayer, Scripture, and quiet reflection, let Your voice reach deeper within me.
Teach me not only to hear, but to truly receive.
Because when You open the heart, life begins to change from the inside out.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
