Why Persecutest Thou Me?

Acts 9:4 (LXX) · 2026-05-04

Saul moves forward with certainty—until Christ interrupts him. Sometimes the greatest grace is not confirmation, but redirection.

Scripture Reading

4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?

Devotional Reflection

We’ve just witnessed a man respond to Christ with joy.

Now, we encounter someone moving in the opposite direction.

Saul.

Confident.
Driven.
Certain he’s right.

A man with authority—
actively seeking out followers of Jesus to silence them.

Moving from place to place,
determined to stop what he believes is a dangerous movement.

And yet—completely unaware
that he’s resisting the very One
he thinks he’s serving.

Until, in a single moment,
on an ordinary road,
everything changes.

“Why persecutest thou Me?”

Saul is not searching.

He is not questioning.

He’s moving forward
with conviction and purpose.

And still—Christ meets him.

Not gently at first.

But directly.

Interrupting his path.
Stopping him in place.

Because sometimes,
transformation begins
when God interrupts
what we thought was right.

There’s something humbling here.

Saul was sincere.

He believed he was doing good.

And yet, he was opposing Christ.

We may not persecute outwardly,
but we can still move through life
with misplaced certainty.

Assuming we see clearly.
Assuming we understand fully.

Until God reveals something deeper.

Today, don’t fear correction.

Don’t resist interruption.

If God is trying to get your attention—

pause.

Listen.

Allow Him to redirect you.

Because sometimes the greatest grace
isn’t confirmation.

It’s redirection.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

There are times when I move forward
with confidence,
believing I understand what is right.

Yet I know I do not always see clearly.

If I am walking in a direction
that is not aligned with You,
do not let me continue unchecked.

Interrupt me.

Stop me where I need to be stopped.

Give me the humility
to receive correction
without resistance.

Open my eyes
to what I have not yet seen.

Soften my heart
where I have grown certain
without seeking You.

And when You call me to change direction,
give me the courage to respond.

Because Your guidance,
even when it is unexpected,
always leads to life.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
