Understandest Thou What Thou Readest?

Acts 8:30–31 (LXX) · 2026-04-30

When Philip meets the Ethiopian official, a simple question opens the door to understanding. Growth begins with humility—the willingness to admit we need guidance.

Scripture Reading

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

Devotional Reflection

Yesterday, Philip was told to arise and go.

He obeyed without knowing the full reason.

And on that road, he encounters a man searching.

Reading Scripture.
Seeking understanding.
Hungry for something more.

This reminds us that spiritual longing often exists quietly
in places we don’t expect.

And when God sees genuine hunger,
He delights to meet it.

“Understandest thou what thou readest?”

The Ethiopian official had access to the text.

He had position.
He had resources.
He had learning.

But he still recognized a need:

Guidance.

That humility matters.

Growth often begins
when we stop pretending to understand everything.

When we become teachable,
the heart opens.

And where the heart opens,
God sends help.

Many people hide their questions.

They fear appearing weak.
They fear seeming unspiritual.
They fear not knowing enough.

But this man does the opposite.

He speaks honestly:

“How can I?”

And that honesty becomes the doorway
to revelation.

Questions do not disqualify faith.

They often deepen it.

Today, bring your questions to God.

Bring the passages you don’t understand.
Bring the places where life feels unclear.
Bring the truths you’re still learning to live.

Seek wisdom.
Remain teachable.
Invite guidance.

God is not frustrated by sincere hunger.

He responds to it.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

At times I carry questions
I do not know how to answer.

There are places in Scripture I do not fully grasp,
and places in life that still feel unclear.

Keep me from pretending
to understand what I have not yet learned.

Give me a humble and teachable heart.

When I need guidance,
send the right help.

When I need wisdom,
open my understanding.

When I feel uncertain,
teach me to remain patient and sincere in my seeking.

Let my questions draw me nearer to You,
not farther away.

And as I continue to learn,
shape me into someone who can also help guide others
with gentleness and grace.

Because truth received in humility
becomes life within the soul.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
