We Cannot But Speak

Acts 4:19–20 (LXX) · 2026-04-25

When Peter and John were told to remain silent, they answered from conviction. What Christ has truly done within us cannot remain hidden forever.

Scripture Reading

19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

Devotional Reflection

The early followers of Christ were not welcomed by everyone.

Their message was questioned.
Their actions were challenged.
Their boldness made others uncomfortable.

And soon, Peter and John were told to stop speaking in the name of Jesus.

Be quiet.
Stay silent.
Keep it to yourselves.

But something had changed too deeply within them.

And today, we hear their answer.

We cannot but speak.

This is not defiance for its own sake.

It’s conviction.

Peter and John are not trying to win an argument.

They’re simply unable to deny what they know to be true.

They had seen Christ alive.
They had been changed.
They had received the Spirit.

And once something real has taken hold of the heart,
it cannot remain buried.

Most of us may never stand before rulers or councils.

But we all face quieter pressures.

The pressure to stay silent.
To keep faith private.
To avoid discomfort.
To blend in.

And yet, if Christ has truly worked in our lives,
there will be moments when love, truth, and gratitude
ask to be expressed.

Not loudly.
Not harshly.

But honestly.

Today, you may not be called to preach.

But you may be called to witness.

A word of encouragement.
A gentle truth.
A testimony of what God has done.
A refusal to hide what matters most.

You don’t need to force anything.

Simply be willing.

When the moment comes,
let what’s true be spoken.

Closing Prayer

Lord,

You have been faithful to me in ways
I cannot fully measure.

You have guided me, sustained me,
and remained near through every season.

And yet, I sometimes grow silent—
from fear,
from hesitation,
from the desire to avoid discomfort.

Give me courage rooted in love.

Help me to speak when it is time to speak,
and to remain gentle when I do.

Let my words reflect truth without pride,
conviction without harshness,
and gratitude without self-importance.

Remind me that I do not need
to defend You with force.

I only need to be faithful
with what I have seen and heard.

Use my voice, my actions, and my life
as a witness to Your goodness.

And when the moment comes,
give me peace and courage
to speak what is true.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
