The Faithfulness of the Seventy
“After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come.”
— Luke 10:1 (LXX)
Some names echo throughout history.
Peter.
John.
Paul.
Their stories fill the pages of the New Testament and have inspired Christians for centuries.
But the Kingdom of God has never been built by a few famous people alone.
Today the Church commemorates the Holy Apostles of the Seventy, men whom Christ personally appointed and sent ahead of Him to proclaim that the Kingdom of God had drawn near. While only a handful of their names are familiar to us, each one shared in the same calling: to prepare hearts to receive the Savior.
Their witness reminds us that God’s work has always advanced through countless faithful servants whose names may be forgotten by history but are never forgotten by God.
Sent Before the Savior
When the Lord appointed the Seventy, He did not send them to establish their own ministries.
He sent them ahead of Himself.
Their task was simple yet profound.
To proclaim peace.
To heal the sick.
To announce that the Kingdom of God was near.
Their mission was never to draw attention to themselves.
It was to prepare others for the coming of Christ.
That remains the calling of every Christian today.
Our words, our actions, and our lives should quietly point beyond ourselves to the One who alone saves.
The Quiet Builders of the Church
The New Testament remembers some of the Seventy by name.
Barnabas.
Silas.
Titus.
Timothy.
Luke.
Others appear only briefly.
Some are mentioned only once.
Many are known primarily through the living Tradition of the Church.
Yet together they carried the Gospel into homes, villages, and cities across the ancient world.
They preached.
They encouraged struggling believers.
They established churches.
Many suffered persecution.
Some gave their lives for the faith.
Most never became as well-known as Peter or Paul.
But without their faithful labor, the Gospel would not have spread as it did.
God often builds His Kingdom through people who quietly remain faithful where He has placed them.
Every Christian Is Sent
Most of us will never travel across the world preaching the Gospel.
Yet Christ continues to send His people into the places where they already live.
Into our homes.
Our workplaces.
Our neighborhoods.
Our parishes.
The mission has not changed.
We prepare the way for Christ whenever we forgive.
Whenever we speak truth with gentleness.
Whenever we offer hope to someone who is discouraged.
Whenever our lives reflect His love more clearly than our words alone ever could.
Like the Seventy, we may never know how far a single act of faithfulness reaches.
But God does.
This Week’s Invitation
Spend a few moments reflecting:
- Where has Christ already sent me to bear witness to His love?
- Am I pointing others toward myself or toward Him?
- What ordinary opportunity has God placed before me today to serve His Kingdom?
The mission often begins much closer to home than we imagine.
A Closing Reflection
The Church remembers the Holy Apostles of the Seventy because faithfulness matters to God, even when history remembers only a few names.
He knows every hidden sacrifice.
Every quiet prayer.
Every act of courage.
Every conversation that plants the seed of hope.
Every life lived in faithful obedience.
The Kingdom continues to grow through people who are willing simply to go where Christ sends them.
He has never required fame.
Only faithfulness.
This Week’s Challenge
This week, look for one opportunity to prepare the way for Christ in someone else’s life.
Encourage a weary friend.
Pray with someone who is hurting.
Offer forgiveness where resentment has lingered.
Invite someone to worship.
Or simply perform one act of quiet kindness without expecting recognition.
Like the Holy Apostles of the Seventy, remember that the greatest mission often begins with one faithful step of obedience.
