A Heart that Weeps

Luke 7:37–38 (LXX) · 2026-04-04

As Lent nears its end, repentance deepens beyond discipline into the heart—where honesty, sorrow, and love are offered freely before Christ.

Scripture Reading

37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Devotional Reflection

As we draw closer to the end of this Lenten journey, something begins to change.

The focus is no longer only on what we do…
or even what we choose…
but on what we feel.

Because there’s a kind of repentance that goes deeper than discipline.
Deeper than effort.

It reaches the heart.

And today, we encounter a moment where repentance becomes something visible—

not through strength…
but through tears.

This woman says nothing.

She offers no explanation.
No defense.

Only tears.

And somehow… that’s enough.

Because repentance isn’t just about turning away from sin.
It’s about turning toward Christ
with a heart that has been softened again.

There are moments when we realize how far we’ve drifted.

Not in a dramatic way.
But quietly.

And when that realization comes, we have a choice.

We can harden ourselves…
or we can allow our hearts to break open.

This woman doesn’t hold back.

She brings everything—
her shame,
her sorrow,
her love—

and lays it at the feet of Jesus.

And He receives her.

Today, don’t rush past what you feel.

• If there’s conviction—sit with it.
• If there’s sorrow—offer it.

If there’s something in your heart that needs to be brought into the light…
bring it.

Not with polished words.
But with honesty.

Because God isn’t looking for perfection.

He’s looking for a heart that’s willing to return.

Closing Prayer

Lord,
So often I guard my heart.
I keep things contained, controlled, and hidden.

But You invite me into something deeper—
a life where I can be honest before You.

Soften what has become hard within me.
Break open what I have kept closed.

Help me to feel again—
not with fear,
but with trust in Your mercy.

When I become aware of my sin,
do not let me turn away in shame.
Draw me closer instead.

Give me the courage to bring everything to You—
my failures, my regrets, my hidden struggles—
and to lay them at Your feet.

And in that place, Lord,
meet me with compassion.

Wash me, restore me, and renew me.

Let my repentance not be shallow,
but real, honest, and full of love.

And as I continue this journey,
teach me to remain near to You—
with a heart that is open,
and a spirit that is alive.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
