Our past has a way of reaching into the present.
Sometimes it comes in the form of regret.
A harsh word we wish we could take back.
A missed opportunity.
A season of wandering from God.
Other times,
the past appears as success.
Achievements that tempt us to become comfortable.
Victories that convince us we have already done enough.
Whether our memories bring sorrow or satisfaction,
they can quietly keep us from moving forward.
Paul understood this.
He had a past that included remarkable accomplishments—
and terrible mistakes.
Yet he refused to allow either one to define his future.
Scripture Reading
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.
Devotional Reflection
When Paul says he is “forgetting those things which are behind,”
he is not suggesting that he literally erased his memories.
He often spoke about God’s faithfulness throughout his life.
He also acknowledged the mistakes he had made before coming to Christ.
Rather,
Paul refused to let the past become his dwelling place.
He would not be chained to his failures.
Nor would he rest upon his successes.
His eyes were fixed on Christ and the road ahead.
That is the freedom the Gospel gives us.
Through repentance,
God removes the guilt of forgiven sin.
Through humility,
He keeps us from living on yesterday’s accomplishments.
In both cases,
He invites us to keep following Him.
There is wisdom in remembering.
We remember God’s mercies.
We remember His answered prayers.
We remember the lessons He has taught us.
But there is a difference between remembering and living there.
Some people cannot move forward
because they continually relive yesterday’s failures.
Others cannot grow
because they continually celebrate yesterday’s victories.
The Christian life is always lived in the present.
Christ meets us today.
His grace is sufficient today.
His Spirit leads us today.
Yesterday has shaped us,
but it does not have the final word.
That belongs to Christ.
Is there something from your past
that still weighs heavily upon your heart?
If it is a sin you have confessed,
thank God for His forgiveness
and leave it in His hands.
If it is a past success,
thank Him for the opportunity He gave you,
then ask Him where He is leading you now.
The Lord is always calling His people forward.
Not all at once.
Not in giant leaps.
But one faithful step at a time.
Take that next step today.
His grace will meet you there.
Closing Prayer
Merciful Father,
Thank You for Your patience with me.
Thank You that my past is not greater than Your mercy,
and my future is safely held in Your hands.
Free me from carrying burdens You have already forgiven.
Guard me from clinging to past successes as though they were enough for today.
Teach me to receive each new day as a gift from You.
Give me courage to follow wherever You lead,
trusting that Your grace is always sufficient for the next step.
May my eyes remain fixed on Christ,
who walks before me,
strengthens me beside me,
and promises never to leave me.
Help me to move forward with hope,
with humility,
and with joyful confidence,
until the day I reach the goal You have prepared for all who love You.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
