Though I Might Also Have Confidence in the Flesh

Philippians 3:4 · 2026-07-14

Paul reminds us that every human achievement is an unstable foundation, but confidence in Christ provides a security that no circumstance can ever take away.

If someone asked you,

“What gives you confidence?”

How would you answer?

Perhaps your experience.

Your education.

Your accomplishments.

Your reputation.

These things are not wrong in themselves.

They’re gifts that can be used for God’s glory.

But they become dangerous when they begin to define our worth.

As Paul continues his letter to the Philippians,

he begins speaking about his own life.

Not to boast.

Not to impress.

But to make an important point.

If anyone could have placed confidence in human achievement,

it was Paul.

And yet he discovered something infinitely greater.

Scripture Reading

4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more.

Devotional Reflection

Before Paul tells us what truly matters,

he first tells us what does not.

He had every earthly reason to feel secure.

He possessed religious credentials.

Knowledge.

Reputation.

Dedication.

If confidence could be earned,

Paul had earned it.

Yet all those things shared one weakness.

They depended upon human effort.

And human effort can never provide lasting peace before God.

The foundation of our lives cannot be built upon ourselves.

It must be built upon Christ.

Only He remains unshaken when everything else begins to crumble.

Every building rests upon a foundation.

Most of the time,

we never think about it.

Until the foundation begins to shift.

The same is true in our spiritual lives.

When everything is going well,

it’s easy to believe our confidence is secure.

But difficulties have a way of revealing what we have truly been leaning on.

If our identity is built upon success,

failure can shake us.

If it’s built upon approval,

criticism can discourage us.

If it’s built upon possessions,

loss can leave us empty.

But when our lives are founded upon Christ,

we discover a stability that circumstances cannot take away.

He remains faithful,

even when everything around us changes.

Today,

ask yourself a simple question.

“What have I been relying upon lately?”

Have you been depending on your own abilities?

Your plans?

Your achievements?

Bring those things before the Lord.

Thank Him for every good gift He has given you.

Then place your confidence where it belongs.

Not in what you have accomplished,

but in the One who has accomplished your salvation.

The stronger our confidence in Christ becomes,

the freer we are from the constant need to prove ourselves.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You know how easily I begin to lean upon things that cannot truly sustain me.

I place confidence in my own abilities,

my own understanding,

or the approval of others.

Yet all of these things are temporary.

Thank You for being the firm foundation that never changes.

When success tempts me to become proud,

turn my eyes back to You.

When failure tempts me to lose heart,

remind me that my identity is secure in Your love.

Teach me to receive every good gift with gratitude,

while trusting in You alone.

May my confidence grow deeper with each passing day,

until my heart finds its rest,

not in what I have done,

but in what You have done for me.

For You alone are my rock,

my salvation,

and my sure foundation.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.
