One of the greatest joys of coming home
is being welcomed.
To know that someone is genuinely glad to see you.
To be received with love
rather than indifference.
With gratitude
rather than expectation.
As Paul prepares to send Epaphroditus back to Philippi,
he does more than announce his arrival.
He encourages the church
to receive him with joy.
Why?
Because faithful servants sometimes return
carrying burdens
that others cannot see.
They may be weary.
They may be discouraged.
They may wonder whether their efforts mattered.
Paul reminds the Philippians
that one of the Church’s beautiful responsibilities
is to welcome one another
with the love of Christ.
Scripture Reading
29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation.
Devotional Reflection
Paul asks the Philippians
to receive Epaphroditus
“with all gladness.”
This is more than a polite greeting.
It’s an expression of gratitude
for a life faithfully lived.
Then Paul adds,
“Hold such in reputation.”
In other words,
honor people like this.
Not because they seek recognition.
But because their faithful service
points others to Christ.
Our world often celebrates
achievement.
Status.
Influence.
But the Kingdom of God
honors something deeper.
Faithfulness.
Humility.
Perseverance.
These are the qualities
that endure
long after earthly accomplishments fade.
Sometimes we think ministry
belongs only to pastors,
missionaries,
or teachers.
But encouragement
is also a ministry.
A sincere word of thanks.
A note of appreciation.
A warm welcome.
These simple acts
strengthen the hearts
of those who quietly serve.
None of us can see every sacrifice
another person has made.
We don’t know every prayer they have prayed.
Every burden they’ve carried.
Every act of obedience
that no one else noticed.
But God knows.
And sometimes
He chooses to encourage His servants
through the kindness of His people.
Today,
think of someone
whose quiet faithfulness
has blessed your life.
Perhaps they taught you.
Prayed for you.
Served beside you.
Or simply remained a steady example
of Christian character.
Take a moment to thank them.
Write a note.
Make a phone call.
Offer words of encouragement.
You may never know
how much those simple expressions of gratitude
mean.
One encouraging word
can strengthen someone
to continue serving faithfully.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the faithful servants You have placed throughout Your Church.
For those whose names are widely known,
and for those whose quiet acts of love are known only to You.
Bless those who faithfully teach,
serve,
encourage,
give,
and pray.
Renew their strength when they grow weary.
Fill their hearts with joy when the work feels difficult.
And help me never take their faithfulness for granted.
Teach me to encourage generously,
to honor sincerely,
and to rejoice whenever I see Your grace at work in another person’s life.
May our churches become places where faithful servants are welcomed with love,
strengthened with kindness,
and reminded that their labor in the Lord is never in vain.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
to whom be glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
now and ever and unto ages of ages.
Amen.
