It’s often said that we live in a world that tells us to put ourselves first.
Protect your interests.
Pursue your goals.
Look out for your own happiness.
While there is wisdom in caring for the responsibilities God has given us,
the Gospel calls us to something much greater.
A life that is no longer centered on ourselves.
As Paul continues speaking about Timothy,
he contrasts him with many others around him.
Not because they lacked ability.
But because their priorities had become misplaced.
Their focus had shifted away from Christ.
And Paul’s words invite us to examine the direction of our own hearts.
Scripture Reading
21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
Devotional Reflection
Paul’s words are both honest and challenging.
“All seek their own.”
He is describing the natural tendency of the human heart.
Left to ourselves,
we naturally think about our own comfort.
Our own success.
Our own desires.
Yet the life of Christ points in another direction.
Jesus continually placed the Father’s will before His own comfort.
He continually placed the needs of others before Himself.
To follow Christ is to allow our priorities to be reshaped.
The question slowly changes from,
“What do I want?”
to,
“Lord, what do You desire?”
Every day our hearts are moving in one direction or another.
Toward ourselves.
Or toward Christ.
The shift is often subtle.
A decision made out of pride.
A conversation centered only on our own concerns.
A missed opportunity to serve because we were too occupied with our own plans.
None of us gets this right all the time.
Yet the Holy Spirit gently continues His work within us.
Teaching us to love more freely.
To listen more carefully.
To become less concerned with building our own lives,
and more concerned with building God’s Kingdom.
Little by little,
our hearts begin to resemble the heart of Christ.
Today,
before making an important decision,
pause for a moment.
Instead of asking,
“What would make my life easier?”
Try asking,
“What would most honor Christ?”
Or,
“How can I best love the people God has placed before me?”
That single change in perspective
can transform the way we approach our families,
our work,
our conversations,
and even our interruptions.
When Christ becomes the center of our lives,
our choices begin to reflect His heart.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You never lived for Yourself.
Every word You spoke,
every step You took,
and every act of love revealed the heart of the Father.
Thank You for showing us what true selflessness looks like.
Turn my heart toward the things that matter to You.
When I become preoccupied with myself,
gently redirect my thoughts.
When I overlook the needs of others,
open my eyes.
When I seek my own way,
teach me to seek Yours instead.
May my desires become more like Yours.
May my priorities reflect Your Kingdom.
And may each day draw me a little farther from self-centeredness,
and a little closer to the generous, joyful life You have called me to live.
For You came not to be served,
but to serve,
and to give Your life for many.
May I never forget that example.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
