We all make plans.
Plans for tomorrow.
Plans for our families.
Plans for our work.
Sometimes those plans unfold exactly as we hoped.
Other times they change in ways we never expected.
Life has a way of reminding us that we are not in control of every circumstance.
Paul understood that better than most.
Writing from prison,
he hoped to send Timothy to the believers in Philippi.
It was a sincere desire.
A thoughtful plan.
Yet before he spoke about what he hoped to do,
he first acknowledged the One who held the future in His hands.
Scripture Reading
19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
Devotional Reflection
Paul does not simply say,
“I will send Timothy.”
Instead, he says,
“I trust in the Lord Jesus.”
Those few words reveal a heart of humility.
Paul made plans.
But he held those plans with open hands.
He recognized that every journey,
every opportunity,
and every outcome ultimately rested with the Lord.
Faith does not mean we stop planning.
It means we remember who is guiding our steps.
We prepare wisely.
We act faithfully.
And we trust God with what comes next.
There’s a difference between making plans and clinging to them.
When we hold too tightly to our expectations,
every change can feel like a disappointment.
Every delay can feel like a failure.
But when our plans are placed into God’s hands,
we begin to see interruptions differently.
Sometimes a closed door protects us.
Sometimes a delay prepares us.
Sometimes the path we never intended to take becomes the one through which God accomplishes His greatest work.
Trust grows when we learn to say,
“Lord, this is my desire,
but Your will is better than mine.”
Today,
think about something you have been planning.
Perhaps it’s a decision.
A conversation.
A goal.
A hope for the future.
Bring it before the Lord.
Pray over it.
Ask Him to guide your steps.
Then hold that plan with open hands.
If He opens the door,
walk through it with gratitude.
If He redirects your path,
follow Him with confidence.
The safest place for our plans is in the hands of Christ.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for caring about every detail of my life.
You know the hopes I carry,
the plans I have made,
and the future I cannot yet see.
Teach me to trust You more than I trust my own understanding.
Give me wisdom to plan carefully,
but also the humility to surrender those plans to Your will.
When You open a door,
give me courage to walk through it.
When You ask me to wait,
give me patience.
And when You lead me in a direction I did not expect,
give me the faith to follow without fear.
May my greatest confidence never rest in my own plans,
but in Your unfailing love and perfect wisdom.
For wherever You lead,
there I know Your grace will already be waiting.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
